According to British Scientist, biofuels made up of corn and rapeseed result in more greenhouse emissions. It has been reported that fuel resulting from rapeseed produces 70 percent and corn produces 50 percent more green house emissions.
Scientist and writer of this report Keith Smith of University of Edinburgh clarifies the significance of appropriate testing of alternative fuels. Smith also stated,
“One wants rational decisions rather than simply jumping on the bandwagon because superficially something appears to reduce emissions.”
Before opting for any alternative fuel, checking its emission characteristic will be beneficial. Argonne National Laboratory’s GREET Model version 1.5a is mainly used for calculating emissions. It will effectively calculate emission of various gases including feedstock, fuel production and tail pipe emissions. But, all these numbers vary in accordance with the vehicle type.
