California's largest utility plans to wind-power electric cars
Naveen | Feb 24 2007

Pacific Gas & Electric, the largest utility in California, is anticipating adding around 4,600-megawatts of wind power to charge flotillas of battery-powered cars during the night with wind energy. The plan is proposed to cutback oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions as well as to stir up the manfacturing of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

The car owners can recharge car batteries through electric outlets during the off-peak hours and recharge the grid from the batteries during critical peak demand periods using PG&E’s ‘Smart grid” technologies such as high-tech meters.

A six-month research in Colorado has revealed the fact that electric cars are set to reduce the overall cost of owning a car and moreover, with the new grid technology, the harmful vehicle emissions will be cut to the half.
