Eco Bikes: Solar Man – Foldable bike supplements your muscles with solar energy

Eco Factor: Electric bike powered by solar energy.

Industrial designer Chen Weiping has made sure that you don’t get tired pedaling your way to your office, provided you are the owner of the Solar Man. The Solar Man is an electric bike design that has received the bronze at Lotus Design Awards. The bike weighs just 12kg and is foldable to allow you to fold and save it with ease.

Solar panels are incorporated in the frame of the bike, which charge the batteries present near the pedals. The designer doesn’t state the operating range he’s expecting with the small battery pack and the top speed the bike can achieve. However, with the pedal power mechanism present, you’ll never be left stranded on a street without any juice.

I don’t understand electric bikes. Bicycles are already the most efficient eco-friendly machines available. This just seems like a waste of money.
