Eco Cars: Fisker Automotive’s super-luxury Karma plug-in hybrid hits the tarmac

Eco Factor: Low-emission car powered by a hybrid engine.

Fisker Automotive, a comparatively new name in auto manufacturing, made waves at the Detroit Auto Show this year when they displayed their ability to merge eco-sense, luxury and speed in a package they call the Karma. The Karma made its public driving debut Saturday during the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races.

The car lapped the raceway at about 100mph, which did look unnatural for a car that is completely silent. The car is powered by a 22KWh lithium-manganese Enerdel battery that fuels a pair of electric motors that deliver a total of 403hp. The car has a range of 50 miles on electricity, which is enhanced by a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection GM Ecotec Engine, which powers an electric generator to keep the electric motors moving.

The car is expected to be rolling out in the first half of 2010 for a list price of $87,900, and adding a little more eco-flavor to the car will lift its price to $104,000.
