Eco Factor: Recycled car transformed to run on batteries and biodiesel.

A team from the University of Kansas, popularly known as Ecohawks, has converted a 1974 VW Beetle to run on a hybrid engine fueled by a biodiesel generator and a series of 10 lead-acid batteries. The old car isn’t actually a speeder with a top speed of just 30mph, but it is built as a proof-of-concept drive without pushing the boundaries.

The retro-looking car is being converted into road-ready shape, which can help it pass a Kansas state inspection easily. The conversion, which did cost around $25,000, is expected to save somewhere between 3 and 12 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.
