Eco Gadgets: Solar powered cellphone is just good enough for calling

Eco Factor: Basic cellphone gets powered by the sun.

The technology-driven world of today is highly dependent on devices such as mobile phones to keep us in contact with our relatives and friends. While some people are rich enough to own the latest and most feature-rich phones on the market today, others still dream about owning a cellphone one day. Designer Julia Schlegel seems to have an answer for such people. She has developed a concept phone dubbed the SoleCall, which is powered by solar panels plastered on its rear side.

The display-less phone won’t carry any hi-tech features under its rubber and plastic body, but will make sure that the owner is able to call using the numeric keypad and the on/off button. The phone comes with a hanger to enable the user to hang it at any place that gets abundant sunlight. This ultra-cheap phone could be an ideal choice for people living in underdeveloped countries.

The Dark Side:

Targeted toward people living in underdeveloped countries, the phone lacks some of the most basic features such as a display. Companies like Nokia are already selling low-cost phones that carry some features such as FM radio and a good enough display, in developing and underdeveloped countries. If the cost of this phone is not more than a bar of chocolate, then it definitely will find some interested customers.
