Eco Gadgets: Solar powered parking meters for New York City
Anupam | Nov 6 2008

Eco Factor: High-tech solar powered meters remain wirelessly networked and connected to a web-based management system.

If you are an eco-driver, the thing that would irritate you most is parking your car and getting your ticket through an electric machine that remains connected to the grid all through the day wasting a huge amount of electricity in the process. Well, if you live in New York City and have an opinion similar to ours, then things are getting brighter for you with these solar-powered parking meters.

The IPS group has installed solar-powered pay stations that can also accept credit cards as a means of payment. The machines come with added eco-friendliness, as they can simply be mounted on top of the poles and bases that were built for traditional meters. These solar-powered meters rely on a wireless connection between them and the centralized Meter Management system for any updates in the parking fee and for sharing other information as well.

The Dark Side:

Since the meters don’t have any backup power system in place, a cloudy day would do wonders for those who don’t like to pay for parking.
