Eco Gadgets: Sun Stations for charging your gadgets with green energy

Eco Factor: Solar powered stations offer people a greener way to charge.

German designer Julene Aguirre-Bielschowsky recognizes the need of a greener way to charge our electronic gear anywhere we might be. The designer has developed a green charging structure known as Sun Station. Made from materials such as concrete, teak wood and stainless steel, the Sun Station can be placed in a wide variety of places, where it can harness the sun.

The designer hopes that the structures would be able to generate about 84W of power, which should be sufficient for laptops, cell phones and other portable gadgets that require on-the-move charging. The electricity is generated by mono crystalline solar cells located 3 meters above the ground for less shading and higher efficiency. A green light below the solar panel informs the user about the availability of electricity. The socket is placed in a transparent safety cover which has lights indicating the amount of energy the gadget is using.

The Dark Side:

The concept looks good and the idea of providing green electricity seems stunning. However, this system could only be used only on a clear day and at that time too the light which indicates the availability of charge would not be visible.

Thanks for providing information about these nice products.

hey, i was fascinated to see my project here! thanks!. The solar cells are 21 sunways monocrystalline solar cells, each one provides between 4 and 4.5 watts of energy at good conditions (meaning 84 Watts in total). If it were very cloudy, the station would still generate around 40 or 50 watts, which is still enough for laptops (laptops need between 30 and 40 watts, cell phones can charge with as little as 8 watts). The amount of energy is planned so that there is always surplus energy that can go either into a battery or a grid tied system (underneath the seat).
