Eco Gadgets: Western Digital debuts energy saving hard drive

Eco Factor: New external hard drive for Mac reduces energy consumption.

Western Digital has launched an energy-efficient external hard drive formatted for Mac. My Book Studio Edition II, as the hard drive is christened, offers a gigantic 2TB of storage in the form of two Green Power 1TB hard drives under its case.

The hard drive has been formatted for HFS+, which is the Mac format, but it includes software and instructions for reformatting to Windows. The system uses about 20W of power, which is about 30% less energy than other standard systems and runs quietly because it doesn’t need a fan. The system has all relevant external I/O interfaces including mini USB, FireWire and eSATA.

The Dark Side:

The hard drive does save a lot on electricity, but couple it with a high-end gaming system and you’ll end up having the same electricity bill, especially if you use its 2TB capacity to store hundreds of games.
