Eco Tech: Joule Biotechnologies produce usable fuel directly from atmospheric CO2

Eco Factor: Engineered photosynthetic process to produce fuel from CO2.

Joule Technologies has announced a breakthrough in fuel generation from carbon dioxide present in the air. The technology is based on highly engineered photosynthetic microbes that thrive of sunlight and CO2 and in return generate hydrocarbon fuel of different types.

The type of fuel produced depends on the kind of organism used, where the end result ranges from ethanol to diesel. The process doesn’t produce any biomass and doesn’t require agricultural feedstock. Another positive of the process is that it doesn’t need a supply of fresh water and the fuel produced could be used directly without extraction or refinement.
