Eco Factor: Biogas-powered German town to become the first in the world.

Lünen, a small town north of Dortmund, Germany, will soon become the first town in the world that will be powered by biogas generated from horse and cow manure. Apart from the manure the authorities are also planning to use organic material from local farms in the process, which would eventually generate sustainable electricity for 90,000 residents.

Biogas is already in use in different parts of the world, but the town authorities state that Lünen would be the first town to have a dedicated biogas network powering the entire town. The process will make use of material such as animal slurry and spoiled crops from local farms which will then be naturally fermented in large heated tanks, breaking it into methane and carbon dioxide.

Biogas generated by this process would then be burned in a CHP plant to generate heat and electricity. The plant would be able to produce 6.8MW of green power, which is enough to power about 26,000 homes. The heat generated in the process will be distributed across the town through a new biogas pipeline that is currently under construction.
