Eco Factor: Prototype airplane made from ecofriendly and lightweight materials.

Southwest Airlines has announced the development of an ecofriendly prototype airplane that will be used to test more eco-conscious materials and products to lower its carbon footprint. Southwest Airlines hopes that the use of these new materials will make their cabin more ecofriendly, while offering the same level of comfort.

The airplane carries InterfaceFlor carpet, which is designed to withstand wear for a longer period of time, is 100% recyclable and also requires less maintenance and cleaning. Moreover, the airplane will make use of lightweight materials that would reduce the amount of fuel required during flights.

The change in the choice of materials has helped Southwest Airlines reduce the plane’s overall weight. The weight reduction comes from new seat covers, which reduces each seat’s weight by two pounds.
