Eco Factor: Raser Technologies’ geothermal project to provide 10MW of green power.
We all want our houses to be powered by solar panels and wind turbines, but apart from their dependence on local climatic conditions, the high installation price of both these technologies has kept them away from global adoption. Until future technology delivers cheap and efficient solar panels and wind turbines, geothermal energy seems to be the most promising source of energy. If you live in Utah, then you might get a chance to become eco-friendly, as Raser Technologies has announced the completion of the first geothermal plant of Utah in over 20 years.
The project has been made along the largest geothermal hotbeds exposed since the last 25 years and has took just 6 months to complete. The company has stated that their zero-emission plant will be able to provide 10MW of green power once it starts functioning. The power plant is expected to begin operations before 2009.
The Dark Side:
Geothermal power plants come with their own set of disadvantages. Construction of such plants can adversely affect land stability in the surrounding region. Moreover, a significant part of the heat generated is lost, which reduces the efficiency of these plants.
