Eco Transport: Solar-power-assisted cable car for cheap, green mass transit

Eco Factor: Solar-powered cable car setup used as public transport in Colombia.

Cable cars are common in ski villages around the world, however, Medellin in Colombia uses the same system as a sustainable and cheaper alternative to commonly used public transportation systems. The city has developed a unique Metrocable system that makes use of solar and grid electricity to deliver gondola rides to residents.

The system makes use of two aerial cable car lines that are integrated with two metro lines. The low building cost of the system and the use of solar electricity has just been the perfect answer to all mobility problems of this Colombian city.

The Dark Side:

Public transport is used as a means for short travel. Metrocable passengers would not be able to use this ingenious system if they have to get down at a place where there is no cable stop. The system would definitely solve problems for some, but only enhance them for many others.
