Ecobutton - Reduce your PC’s energy output and carbon footprint
Piyush | Jan 30 2008

Are you willing to reduce your PC’s energy output and carbon footprint? If yes, then this device called the ‘Ecobutton’ can solve your problem. This device can be plugged into any PC’s USB port and at the push of a button; the Ecobutton automatically puts your computer into a special ‘ecomode’ that saves more energy than normal sleep mode, drawing only the same nominal power as when the computer and the monitor are completely shut down. It helps you save energy while taking a phone call or a break, while doing paperwork, lunch or meetings. At the touch of any button, the computer instantly returns to where you left off and displays a splash screen showing both money and carbon (CO2) savings. Such reminders can change your thinking and make you a responsible person.

Umm since power managment is a fucntion of the power supply, motherboard, cpu and chipset I would really like to know how this saves more energy than going into standby and/or suspend.

I do not believe there is any way for this device to add a power saving mode to an existing system. It may simply use one thats already a function of your hardware. I’m afraid someone may be playing fun and fast with their concept of green.
