Fresh air empowers a motorbike too

Air powered engines are not new, but they sure are motivating to ride on for a greener path. And that’s exactly what TV presenter Jem Stansfield has done. For a National Geographic channel documentary, Planet Mechanics, he has assembled the world’s first motorcycle that is powered by fresh air. He managed to achieve it by befitting his Puch moped with high pressure carbon fibre air cylinders. The ones that are used by fire fighters as breathing apparatus in burning buildings. These cylinders power two rotary air engines which in turn drive the chain to the rear wheel. Unlike electric scooters, it takes just seconds to recharge from larger air tanks filled by a diving compressor. However its can just achieve a maximum of 18mph speed at a range of just 7 miles. Stansfield does admit that it’s never going to be good for trans-continental touring but one can definitely run a fleet of delivery bikes on it. Is McDonald or Pizza Hut looking out for a greener option for home deliveries?
