Newspaper Furniture – Read it and then sit on it too!

Here at Ecofriend we dig for everything that comes under the category of ecological. We are keen to bring the best of the news from eco-world…be it huge, significant, globe-turning projects or minor, less significant but interesting concepts and products. Like the Newspaper Furniture conjured by designer Yasmin Sethi! Ideally people buy a piece of furniture to house the newspapers, but contrary to the practice, here is a sturdy, practical collection of furniture made by recycling the much unavoidable newspaper! Yasmin dared to and designed a chair and a table as a part of her final project during her Foundation in Art and Design. Realizing that when rolled, newspapers render great strength, she crafted a chair with backrest made out of tightly rolled newspapers that have been bound together. Even the table is made by folding the sheets of a newspaper to make a petal shape.

Though decorative in design it also follows the law of physics and helps to distribute weight evenly and thereby fulfils the weight bearing function of a table. The structure is further strengthened by placing newspaper rolls inside the petals. The overhead view of this table is very pretty and looks like a flower. Lastly a sheet of clear Perspex is placed on top of the table base.

Hey, but what if a glass of water or hot coffee is spilled on it?

That’s new idea to use newspaper after reading.....Designing a house hold goods .But is any method to utilize polythene bags to such an artistic concept to save the environment?

Wow! this is a cool way to use old newspapers and best part is you can make a new look furniture for your home every month with ”new” old papers :)
And if it gets wet or loose the strength, simply sell them off as raddi and make money while the paper gets recycled!
Its like squeezing more out of newspapers before giving them off to raddiwala!

And Vikas, I too hope we will get such ideas for using plastic bags but till that time keep reusing them.

Vikas, it has been tough to come up with innovative yet artistic ideas to recycle plastic bags. Reusing plastic is preferable to recycling as it uses less energy and fewer resources.
However u can stuff a large recycled cloth ed bean bag with hundreds of such plastic bags n use it as a eco-sitting furniture.
