Olympus: Taking the plastic out of packaging
Sameer Kumar | Sep 2 2008

Cleaning up the planet from plastic litter is one of the hardest things to do. Plastic is considered a serious environmental problem as it is one of the most widely used materials in every industry, and it comes in plenty of forms and shapes which are widespread and available easily. The hardest part of dealing with plastic is finding an alternative to the material, as it is both cheap and easy to use. Yet many companies are coming up with strategic plans to slowly eliminate the hazard from their systems, and Olympus has joined that green bandwagon.

The company known for producing impeccable moments on film is now all geared up to tackle various environmental issues, and reducing plastic in its packaging material is one of the initial steps in that direction. From the coming fall the optics and imaging concern will remove 70 percent of landfill-feeding plastics from the packaging for its audio products and 80 percent from the company’s xD-Picture Card casing. This would mean a lot less plastic in the dumps and avoiding horrible mishaps such as marine animals choking on plastic trash.

While Olympus is all set to embrace the eco-changes, maybe it is time for some of the other major companies to also make such changes to their packaging material, as it often seems to have a lot of non-biodegradable waste.
