Princess Elisabeth Station, which claims to be the Antarctic’s first “zero-emission” base, runs entirely on renewable energy and completely recycles all waste. Its roof will be covered by solar panels, designed to provide the bulk of energy needed to run the isolated post. Other energy sources will come from large wind turbines. Not relying on costly fuel shipments will keep costs and the environmental impact low as its scientists study climatology, glaciology and microbiology for the next 25 years. The station is set to arrive at the South Pole for Christmas this year and then will be hauled, piece by piece, onto the 60- to 90-foot-high ice shelf and some 124 miles inland, where it will be rebuilt and become home to 20 scientists.
