Roly Poly Pot: Saving the lives of thirsty plants
Anwesha | Jan 8 2008

A human being would wither if he has to go without water for a considerable time. The same goes for plants. However, unlike plants, humans can search for water till their last breath and move around to find himself a drop to save his life. At least, he can ask or beg his fellowmen for water. Plants, on the other hand, die a muted death from thirst.

Plants are our saviors. And it’s only the moral duty of man to help them live, for their sake as well as ours. Designer Samgmin Bae not only realized this, but came up with something that might give many a thirsty plant a new life.

The Roly-Poly Pot works on the concept that plants fall over when they begin to die of thirst. The mechanism is, at the same time, simple and innovative. With the built-in water monitor and a balancing system, this pot could detect the humidity level of the soil based on the pre-setting, just as if it is begging for water. Using water as a counterweight, the pot slowly tips over when water levels are low in a pot. Believe it or not, the Roly Poly Pot can be adjusted to each plant’s individual and varied watering requirements!

Plants will have to wait a while longer for their ‘angel’, as the Roly Poly Pot is still in the concept stage. We sure hope such an ‘intelligent’ pot hits the market soon.

Wow, those poor plants. Plants really don’t like moving around that much. I’d be interested to hear from someone who keeps their plants in roly poly pots ... do they actually thrive? Is it so hard to remember when to water your plants?

Monkeys and rats live longer than normal lifespans when you keep them at near-starvation levels but I would hardly call that ”saving their lives”.

This comment may seem extreme, but this invention, although undoubtedly cute and clever, strikes me as another cheap gimmick designed to make money off lazy people at the expense of the well-being of their flowers.

Thanx for your comment. I agree with u on the point that it’s unfair to ’forget’ to water your plants and unfortunate that anybody should need to use the roly poly pot at all. But its at least better than ignoring the plant altogether, isnt it? So it’s not making money ’at the expense of the well-being of their flowers’. rather, it ensures that the plants dont die of thirst. i am not sure how the examples of monkeys

It says in the last paragraph that they are not even being manufactured yet, so you have a few days to worry about it. While I think its a great idea on paper, my plants would fall off various shelves, ledges, tables etc. Then they’d be REALLY thirsty.

This might be needed for some, have you ever seen plants in an office? Now everyone can have a green thumb.

so, you mean to say, your plants will grow in perfect symmetry every time and they won’t mess with the CG at all? that’s amazing......

but seriously, what do you do when the plant grows off one side? does it still work?
