Somnus Hus - A novel fate for organic waste
C.S. | Nov 19 2007

Wastes can be broadly segregated as organic and inorganic wastes. While organic wastes are those that are natural, like wastes from kitchens comprising vegetable skin, stalk etc, inorganic wastes are usually those with chemical components. So far, we know of organic wastes being used as natural fertilizer for our gardens and its by-product of decomposition, methane as cooking gas. What it is transformed to in Gothenburgh, Sweden is a new approach. Organic wastes from houses are packed in deposit paper bags and dumped in a shed. But this shed does not give out foul smell because it is inoculated with bacteria that suck up the moisture and perhaps also the methane gas produced.

In 4 to 5 days, the compost appears completely desiccated and like wood chips which they later distribute to the community gardens. This Somnus Hus method is a novel idea and serves a purpose, if not essential a neat one.
