Hundreds of mountaineers have fallen victim and many more have testified to nature’s fury especially in conditions of heavy snowfall. Dehydration is a very common problem. Most often than not, mountaineers use up a considerable amount of fuel just in melting snow to keep themselves hydrated.
Sensing this need, a student at Victoria University in Wellington, Knewstubb Brad, came up with a revolutionary new design for a windmill. Using extremely light and strong materials like carbon fiber and titanium, this windmill with carbon fiber hoppers as its turbine blades can generate enough power to ensure a regular supply of melted snow. It is capable of generating about 80W of power to ensure an hourly supply of 750ml of melted snow.
This creation called Hydra, would ultimately help climbers save precious fuel they carry along as well as ensure protection against dehydration. With the kind of power output promised, it wouldn’t be long before we see it in action in our day to day lives as well
